Once upon a time, business owners could establish our credibility and find customers so much more easily. All it took was a simple headshot, some photos of our product, and bam! We’re in business.
Nowadays, attracting clients and staying on top of the chaos practically requires a personal assistant or social media coordinator (wouldn't that be nice!?). To stand a chance in our industries, we must play in the highly competitive and over-saturated world of social media.
Not only do business owners need the aforementioned images, but now it’s essential that we constantly refresh our websites, social media feeds, and marketing with top-notch images that engage the viewer with our brand and product.
How are we supposed to keep up with the constant need for engaging new media? How do we stand out from our competition while still having enough time to keep our doors open and make a profit?
One of the most effective strategies to increase your audience engagement is personal branding. Below I share my tips for leveraging your personal brand to grow you business and ways to make it easier.
1. Add a human element
Your personal brand is the unique combination of skills and experiences that make you 'you'. It’s what you and your business represent and how you make your customers feel. Everyone has a personal brand, but only the skilled are embracing it and leveraging it to fuel their business success.
As business owners, we have the unique opportunity to adapt our personal brand for our business. Showing the face behind your company will help you connect with your dream clients and can be the factor that edges out the competition. But you’ve got to keep it authentic, coming across as approachable and relatable to your ideal customer.
So what does your brand say about you? What do you want it to say? Take a look at your brand's social media feed - do you see your face? If not, it's time to step out from behind the curtain.
2. Share authentic photos (of YOU!)
Personal branding photography goes way beyond the basic headshot. Yes, it shows you looking successful and knowledgeable and it is the most effective way to position yourself as an expert. But then it goes a step further and shows that you are a real person that gets excited about things beyond just what pays the bills.
Your audience wants to see more than just your expertise in what you do. If you're passionate about seeing Colorado from the peak of every 14er or you're just starting to integrate yoga into your life, be truthful about it. Your audience likes to watch journeys that they can relate to. Personal branding is just that - it's personal, it's raw, it's not only what you do but how you do it and who you are.
Effective photos are all about speaking directly to the people you want to work with most, creating points of connection and providing ways for your clients to relate to you on a regular basis.
3. Be memorable
The strongest personal brands focus on stories. They consistently share new content that adds to their narrative. For example, a chef at a farm-to-table restaurant might share her quest for the freshest ingredients, or tell the tale of some kitchen experiments gone wrong.
Personal branding photos tell your stories by showing you in action, capturing you doing what you love to do. Sharing both your personal and professional successes is an excellent way to humanize your brand and connect with people on an authentic level. These are examples of more great stories to tell:
Behind the scenes or “a day in the life” showing what it looks like to run your business
Enjoying family time with your kids on the weekend
Taking part in your favorite hobby (running, cooking, painting, yoga)
Playing fetch or hiking with your dog
Personal branding portraits make you more relatable and elevate your brand by helping you build trust, rapport, and real human connection with your fans. You want people to know what it feels like to work with you, before they’ve even met you.
4. Up your game with professional photos
Selfies, cell-phone shots, and stock photos just don't cut it these days. Successful brands need professional photography to really look the part. That's where personal branding photographers come in. Unlike most photographers, we're specialized in working with entrepreneurs to translate your brand and message into effective photos.
The goal of my personal branding photo shoot is to express the heart and soul of your brand. We’ll figure out what traits and skills you want your audience to remember about you and your business. Then we'll plan the different stories you want to tell and how and where you want to use your images.
Maybe you are a healthy living coach who loves involving your kids in the kitchen, or maybe you’re an expert craftsman who loves geeking out about new technologies.
I'll combine all your ideas and goals to design a photo shoot just for you. We'll create the exact photos you need to help you stand out from your competition and attract your dream clients.
5. Make it easy with batch content
The best part about your personal branding shoot (besides the fun we have) is that you walk away with all the photos you need for the next 3 months --- created in just one session! Keeping your media fresh is easy when you have a whole album full of your favorite branded photos.
What do you do after those 3 months? I offer yearly subscriptions with a photo shoot every quarter to keep your images, ideas, and looks fresh. Now that I'm familiar with your brand, it's even easier to create unique photos and story ideas to help you stand out from the crowd.
With the strain of social media and marketing off your plate, you can spend more time on what you're passionate about. (Like family, and pets, and finding the best chocolate cake!)
